CASH ADVANCE MATH / CAN YOU BORROW FROM VENMO

Can you borrow money from Venmo? Not as a loan

Venmo's own pages describe no personal loan or paycheck advance. Here is the credit Venmo does offer, what it costs and what to compare first.

We may earn a commission from some provider links. It never changes the order, which is always set by cost. How we make money

Not as a loan. Venmo's fee schedule, user agreement and help center describe no personal loan or paycheck advance, and PayPal, the provider of the Venmo service, is not a bank, does not take deposits and is not FDIC insured. If your Venmo balance cannot cover a payment, Venmo says it will draw the entire amount from an eligible payment method of your choice.

The credit Venmo does offer is the Venmo Credit Card, issued by Synchrony Bank. If you are approved, its cash advance fee is either $10.00 or 5% of the amount of each cash advance, whichever is greater, and interest starts on the transaction date. Paying someone on Venmo with any credit card costs a 3.00% fee, and the card issuer may also charge a cash-advance fee. Compare those costs with the options below before you borrow.

The Venmo Credit Card

The Venmo Credit Card is a credit line from Synchrony Bank, managed in the Venmo app. To apply, you must be at least 18 years old, living in the US or its territories, with a Venmo account in good standing that has been open for at least 30 days. Applying runs a soft credit inquiry that will not impact your credit score, but if you are approved, a hard inquiry will be performed, which may impact your credit score.

For comparison, Venmo's fee page lists a purchase APR of the prime rate plus 11.99%, 20.99% or 23.99%, depending on your account type. The card has no annual fee.

These terms come from Venmo's fee page, which says the card information is accurate as of June 27, 2024 and may have changed. Venmo's help center now links separate card terms for cardholders approved before and after 9/24/2026. Your own fee, APR and limits are in the Venmo app. Because the APR is the prime rate plus a margin and the terms may have changed, we do not price a Venmo Credit Card cash advance. Paying with a credit card on Venmo

Venmo charges a 3.00% fee when you send money to a Venmo account or U.S. PayPal account with a credit card. There is no fee when you pay with your Venmo balance, a debit card or a bank account.

The fee is not the only cost. Venmo's user agreement says the card issuer may also charge a cash-advance fee. Its help center explains that cash advance fees are the same fees that are charged when you use a credit card to withdraw money from an ATM or branch, and that "Your credit card issuer decides all of the fee details, and this info isn't shared with us when you're sending money on Venmo." Some card providers may add other possible cash advance service fees, including a higher APR. A payment sent with a credit card can therefore carry Venmo's fee plus your card's cash advance costs.

To see whether your card may charge these fees, go to the Me tab, then Wallet, then your card under Banks and cards. Venmo's own advice is to use a bank account or debit card for payments you send on Venmo.

Borrowing from a friend on Venmo

Through Venmo, you can borrow from someone you know. To ask for money, go to Pay/Request, add the person, enter an amount and a note, then tap Request. Agree on how you will pay it back before you request it.

To repay on a set date, you can schedule the payment: Pay/Request, add the person, enter an amount, tap Schedule, select your payment frequency and an end date, then save and pay. A scheduled payment uses your Venmo balance first, with a backup payment method you choose. If a payment is larger than the money in your linked bank account, Venmo's user agreement warns that the bank may charge overdraft fees, even if you chose not to allow overdrafts with your bank.

Money you receive stays in your Venmo balance until you move it. Moving it to your bank with a standard transfer is free and typically available in 1-3 business days. Instant Transfer costs 1.75% (minimum $0.25 fee, maximum $25 fee).

Getting paid earlier with Direct Deposit

Direct Deposit is not a loan, but it can close a short gap. Venmo says Direct Deposit lets you get paid up to two days early, without any additional fees. That depends on your employer sending paycheck information 1-2 days in advance of payday. The money is your own paycheck arriving sooner, so there is nothing to repay.

Cash advance apps if you use Venmo

Cash advance apps are separate from Venmo, and none of the 12 apps we track officially lists Venmo as a supported bank. Some name it as unsupported. Check what each app says about Venmo before you apply.

Other ways to cover a short gap

  • Cash advance apps: in our $100 example, the lowest-cost standard route is Current, EarnIn, Klover and MoneyLion Instacash at $0.00, and the lowest-cost instant route is EarnIn at $5.99. Use the calculator for your own amount and see all 12 app profiles.
  • Credit union loans: Payday Alternative Loans give you more time to repay than a single payday.
  • Cash App: if you also use Cash App, Cash App Borrow is a loan inside that app, offered to some accounts.
  • Payday loans: check your state's rules first. The card at the top of this page shows the CFPB's typical fee example for $100.

What we could not verify

  • A direct statement from Venmo. We found no Venmo page that says in so many words that Venmo does not offer loans. Our answer rests on Venmo's fee schedule, user agreement, help center and product pages, which describe no personal loan or paycheck advance. The only credit product we found is the Venmo Credit Card from Synchrony Bank.
  • Current Venmo Credit Card terms. Venmo's fee page says its card cost information is accurate as of June 27, 2024 and may have changed. Venmo's help center links separate Synchrony terms for cardholders approved before and after 9/24/2026, and Synchrony's terms pages refused our requests, so we could not read the current fee, APR or cash advance limit. Check the terms in your own Venmo app.
  • A cash advance cost in dollars. Venmo publishes the cash advance APR as the prime rate plus a margin, not as a number, and its card terms may have changed since June 27, 2024. We therefore do not price a Venmo Credit Card cash advance.
  • Cash advance fees on Venmo payments. Venmo says your card issuer decides whether a payment sent with a credit card counts as a cash advance and does not share the fee with Venmo. We found no Venmo page saying how payments funded by the Venmo Credit Card itself are treated.
  • Pay later inside Venmo. Venmo is provided by PayPal, Inc., but we found no Venmo or PayPal page saying PayPal Pay in 4 or Pay Monthly can be used from a Venmo account.
  • Help center dates. The Venmo help articles we used show no last-updated date, so we cannot say when their wording last changed.
